The European Union has recently implemented more favorable Schengen visa regulations for Indian nationals, allowing them to request multiple-entry visas with extended validity periods. The new visa "cascade" system streamlines the application process for Indians residing in India, offering increased access to longer-duration visas for those with a solid travel history and sufficient passport validity.
How the visa cascade system works
Under the revised visa cascade system, Indian travelers can now obtain long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after using two visas within the previous three years. A five-year visa may subsequently be granted if the passport meets the required validity conditions. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy privileges comparable to those of visa-free nationals.
Part of a broader EU-India relationship
This decision reflects the deepening relationship under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, which focuses on comprehensive collaboration in migration policy and on enhancing people-to-people interactions between the two regions. Schengen visas issued under this system give holders the flexibility to freely visit the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period, making travel between Europe and India considerably easier.
What this means for travelers
The enhanced Schengen visa rules mark a significant step in facilitating smoother travel experiences for Indian nationals and strengthening ties between the EU and India. Indian travelers with a track record of compliant Schengen travel now have a clearer path to longer-validity visas, which can meaningfully simplify planning for frequent business trips, family visits, or extended stays across the Schengen area.
